Orthotics

Best Friend to the Foot.

Custom Orthotics in Nanaimo:

Custom foot orthotics are not the hard, thick, and painful shells of the past.  Advances in custom foot orthotics over the years have produced light weight, flexible designs, that move with your foot creating more functional and lasting changes.  Although custom foot orthotics have their effect on your feet, a chiropractor can use them to affect everything from your localized foot pain (such as plantar fasciitis) to migraines and everything in between.

At The Wellhouse our team of chiropractors have access to a number of different orthotic designs allowing us to pick the perfect product for your individual concerns.

Because we know you were wondering…

Should I wear my orthotics all the time?

Although you don’t need to wear them all the time the longer you wear them each day the more benefit you will get from them.  Most often we suggest a full 8 hour work day is plenty of time in your orthotics.

What if I have specific activities I perform each day?

We have you covered.  Our huge selection of specialty orthotics can be fit in anything from a dress shoe, a lightweight running flat, to a forresters heavy caulk boot.  We haven’t been stumped yet!

How much do orthotics Cost?

This depends on what type you need, any special additions, as well as the number you order.  Typical price points range from $200 to $1000 (but don’t worry, most of us don’t need carbon fibre orthotics).  What we can promise is there won’t be any surprises and you will always have choices of different price points.

Will my new orthotics be uncomfortable?

Since the custom orthotic works to realign the structure of your foot you may feel pressure in some areas as the custom orthotic attempts to do its job. For this reason custom orthotics should be worn in two hour intervals and slowly extend the wear time over a period of two weeks.  Most of our patients refuse to remove the orthotics after 2 hours because they feel too comfortable.ns

Can I wear them in my regular shoes?

For the most part any shoe that has a removable insole will work with your custom orthotic. Just remove the insole that came with the shoe and replace it with the custom orthotic.  If you are about to buy new shoes we suggest you wait until you receive your new orthotics so you can take them with you when trying on your new shoes.

Does the support of an orthotic result in weaker foot muscles?

Custom orthotics will not reduce muscles tone. They will help position your foot so you will be using the right muscles at the right time, minimizing fatigue and allowing your muscles to be used more efficiently.

Orthotic Options:

At the Reed Family Wellness Centre our team of chiropractors have access to a number of different orthotic designs allowing us to pick the perfect product for your individual concerns.  Since your assessment is performed by one of our chiropractors, you don’t only receive an orthotic that’s just perfect for your foot. It’s an orthotic that will benefit your entire musculoskeletal system (from your toes to your nose).

Are Orthotics an Option For You?

The most common symptoms we hear that lead us to examining your feet for possible orthotics include:

    • Bunions, hammer toes or calluses
    • Feet that flare out when you walk
    • Localized foot pain that is worse after prolonged activity
    • Localized arch pain that is worse in the morning when getting out of bed
    • Knee pain located at the front or inside of your knee
    • Chronic recurrent low back pain
    • Any back pain in children

Steps for fitting your New Custom Orthotics:

The Consultation:  After arriving at The Wellhouse for your scheduled visit, you’ll  be greeted by our reception team who will ask you to fill out a few simple forms to give the doctor a bit of information regarding your overall health picture.  You’ll have ample time to discuss your concerns directly with the doctor who will help decide whether orthotics are the right choice for you.

The Examination:  One of the greatest benefits of choosing The Wellhouse as your orthotics provider is the complete biomechanical examination that you will receive. This exam allows us to customize them for your  specific needs.  Our chiropractors will perform two neurological scans to assess the overall stress on your system, a posture examination to look at how the feet interact with the rest of the body, a gait analysis, a comprehensive orthopedic examination of your feet, hips, low back, and neck, and if necessary x-rays of your pelvis and spine. Your results will indicate the exact requirements you need. Our thorough examination process ensures an orthotic that will be of most benefit to your body. Any thing less is guesswork.

The Casting Process:  At The Wellhouse we understand that one fitting method is not suited for everyone.  For this reason, we have multiple tools that we use for casting your orthotic.  Digital scanning, non-weight bearing casting, and even the old school method of plaster casts can all help us find the orthotic that you (and perhaps your insurance provider) are most comfortable with.
